Where it all happens...

The recombinant studio basically consists of my office in our new condo in Petaluma, California.

Control Center

I have a much more simplified system than I did in days past...

Once upon a time, I used to have the following equipment housed in an SKB rack:

  • Boss 8 Channel Mixer (on top of rack)
  • MXR Distortion Pedal (on top of rack)
  • Zoom Studio 1204
  • JL Cooper MIDI Patch Bay
  • Roland MKS-70 Super JX
  • Boss DR-660 Drum Machine
  • Roland MT-32 Synth Module/Doorstop
  • DOD Chorus Pedal
  • Peavey PV-1200 Power Amplifier
  • ...but now times have changed, and I've gone down to just these pieces of equipment:

  • Roland Juno-60 - I have loved this keyboard ever since I bought it in 1986...
  • Zoom Studio 1204
  • M-Audio Radium 61 MIDI controller keyboard
  • M-Audio O2 MIDI controller keyboard
  • Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop
  • Yamaha Yamaha MG10/2 Stereo Mixer
  • MOTU FastLane MIDI Interface
  • Desktop PC - running Audacity and other recording software ane plugins
  • I still have the Boss DR-660 Drum Machine, the Peavey PV-1200 Power Amplifier and Peavey speakers, the DR-660 I hardly use now, and the amp and speakers I still use frequently when I practice or play out with my band, The South Downs, or when I DJ.

On my Dell laptop, my current setup includes Reason 3.0 and Reaktor 5 - both awesome applications, and I'm really looking forward to doing some crazy stuff with Reaktor...

I'm having a blast using Reason as a live tool - just like a rack synth. The ironic thing is that I'm not using it as a tool for doing techno, trance, or house like everyone else, but I'm actually using it for piano, organ and other lo-fi sounds. It's awesome, and hopefully you'll be able to check it out on some of the new recordings we (The South Downs) are doing.
